Winter Skills Course 16th -17th Feb

Enjoyed two days instructing with Chris, James, Ian, Frank and Sam in and around Helvellyn.
Thank you all for attending and making it an enjoyable weekend...

Day One -
After checking personal equipment the night before, we ventured out into Red Tarn Cove practicing navigation techniques and learning how to carry a ice axe. We then found a suitable slope to practice moving on snow using different techniques from self belay, kicking steps, pigeon holing to heel plunging down the slope.

We then looked at ice axe arresting from different sliding positions and then moved on to crampon work and avalanche assessment - then ascending the slope onto Striding Edge.
After descending back down to the Tarn, we continued with some more navigation training and then looked at constructing emergency shelters.

Day Two -
After a good breakfast, we walked out to Brown Cove, again working on navigation along the way.
We got to the headwall with Lower Man and planned the route up the slopes before using the skills we learnt the previous day to ascend the slopes onto the plateau above, observing avalanche debris along the way.
After spending a short time on the summit of Helvellyn we descending via Keppel Cove and discovered a suitable gully to create a bivvy shelter.

The weather conditions for the whole weekend were good, albeit very mild for the time of year.

We then returned to Glenridding, having a quick course debrief before everyone went on their way. Thanks again for all your efforts!
